How to Use a Coffee Drip Bag — The Complete Guide

How to Use a Coffee Drip Bag — Complete Brew Guide | Auro Adelaide

Learn exactly how to brew a coffee drip bag step by step. Water temperature, pour technique, timing and tips for the best cup every time. By Auro Speciality Coffee Adelaide.

No grinder. No scales. No special equipment. Just hot water, a mug, and three minutes.

Drip bags are the easiest way to brew specialty coffee anywhere in the world — and when you do it right, the result is genuinely extraordinary. Here's everything you need to know.

WHAT IS A COFFEE DRIP BAG?

A drip bag is a single-serve filter filled with freshly ground specialty coffee. It's designed to hang over the rim of your mug, letting you pour hot water through the grounds and straight into your cup — no equipment required.

Think of it as a pour over in a pocket. The same slow extraction, the same clarity of flavour — just without any of the gear.

At Auro we fill our drip bags with the exact same freshly roasted specialty coffee we sell in our 250g bags. The only difference is it's been ground and sealed at peak freshness, ready to brew anywhere.

WHAT YOU NEED

Just three things:

  • A mug — standard size, 200–250ml

  • Hot water — just off the boil, around 90–95°C

  • One Auro drip bag — that's it

A kettle with a temperature setting is ideal but not essential. If you're boiling in a standard kettle, let it sit for 45–60 seconds after boiling before you pour.

HOW TO BREW — STEP BY STEP

Step 1 — Open the packet Tear open the foil packet along the top. You'll find the drip bag inside — it has two paper tabs folded flat against the sides.

Step 2 — Unfold the arms Gently pull the two paper tabs outward so they sit flat and horizontal. These are the hooks that sit over the rim of your mug. Place them over opposite sides of the rim so the bag hangs suspended over the centre of the cup.

Step 3 — The bloom pour Start your timer. Pour just enough hot water to completely wet the coffee grounds. You'll see the coffee swell and release tiny bubbles — this is CO₂ escaping from freshly roasted coffee. This is called the bloom and it's a sign your coffee is fresh. Wait 30 seconds.

Step 4 — First pour Pour slowly and steadily till the top edge. Let it fully drain.

Step 5 — Second pour Once the water level drops close to the grounds, pour again steadily till the top edge.

Step 6 — Let it drain Don't squeeze the bag — it adds bitterness.

Step 8 — Remove and enjoy Lift the bag out by the paper arms, discard, and drink immediately.

WATER TEMPERATURE MATTERS

This is the most overlooked variable when brewing a drip bag.

Water that's too hot — straight off the boil at 100°C — over-extracts the coffee and can produce harsh, bitter notes. Water that's too cool under-extracts and produces a weak, sour, flat cup.

The sweet spot is 90–95°C. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle:

  • Boil your kettle fully

  • Wait 45–60 seconds before pouring

  • You'll be in the right range

HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I USE?

Each Auro drip bag is designed for 180 to200ml of water — a standard cup. This gives you a balanced, full-flavoured brew.

If you prefer a stronger cup, use 170–180ml. If you like it lighter or you're making a long black style, use 220–230ml. The bag handles a small range well — just adjust to your taste.

WHAT WATER SHOULD I USE?

As with all specialty coffee, water quality matters. Adelaide tap water is chlorinated and often higher in sodium than ideal — this can mute delicate flavour notes.

For best results use softened filtered water . Either will noticeably improve your cup compared to straight tap water. For more on why water matters so much, read our guide to water and minerals for filter coffee.

COMMON MISTAKES AND HOW TO FIX THEM

The coffee tastes bitter or harsh Water was too hot or you poured too fast. Let your kettle sit longer before pouring and slow down your pour rate.

The coffee tastes weak or sour Water wasn't hot enough, or you used too much water. Try 90–93°C and reduce to 180ml total.

The water drains too fast and the cup tastes thin You may have poured too quickly without letting the bloom settle. Slow your pour right down and give the bloom a full 30 seconds.

There are grounds in my cup The bag may have been tilted during brewing. Make sure it hangs straight and level over the centre of the mug.
